Which applications will be most popular in 2012?
Location-based services will be featured in some of the biggest consumer mobile applications in three years’ time, Gartner has predicted.
The research firm placed location-based services in second place in its list of the ten mobile apps that will have the biggest influence on customers and the industry in 2012.
Gartner has estimated that the user base for location-based services will grow from 96 million people in 2009 to more than 526 million in three years.
“Its high user value is the result of its ability to meet a range of needs, ranging from productivity and goal fulfilment to social networking and entertainment,” the report explained.
The company also said mobile advertising will play a significant part in the future apps market, noting that total spend on the channel will rise to $7.5 billion (£4.5 billion) in 2012.
It comes after a report from Berg Insight AB claimed that there will be 160 million subscribers to navigation services across the world by 2015.
